Open source going mainstream
Thu, 2007-11-22 13:13 — trevortwining
Here’s another great article about a school board in Indiana making great use of open source software to stretch a technology budget. The strategy has let them meet some aggressive targets in student access to technology.
I think one of the more important points deals with the laptop projects started by many boards. When the laptop technology gets old, there is often no budget left to purchase new ones, with the associated licensing, and begin the process anew. use of FOSS provides us with the ability to redirect funds normally used for licensing back into hardware acquisition. This offers a much more sustainable approach long-term.
